Relationship Between Metacognit ion , Motivat ion , Locus of Contro l , Self - Efficacy , and Academic Achievement

T h e p u r p o s e o f this stucly was to e x a m i n e t h e r e l a t i o n s h i p b e t w e e n m e t a c o g n i t i o n a n d c e r t a i n p e r s o n a l i t y v a r i a b l e s a n d t h e r o l e they p l a y i n a c a d e m i c a c h i e v e m e n t . B i g g s ' (1987) m o d e l o f m e t a c o g n i t i o n was u s e d as the t h e o r e t i c a l f r a m e w o r k f o r t h e study. M e a s u r e s o f m e t a c o g n i t i o n , m o t i v a t i o n , l o c u s o f c o n t r o l , a n d self -eff icacy w e r e u s e d to c o m p a r e w i t h s t u d e n t s ' i n d i c a t i o n o f c u r r e n t a c a d e m i c average . T h e s e m e a s u r e s w e r e a d m i n i s t e r e d to a s a m p l e o f 108 G r a d e 12 s tudents i n N e w B r u n s w i c k a n d N e w f o u n d l a n d . T h e resul ts i n d i c a t e d s i g n i f i c a n t pos i t ive r e l a t i o n s h i p s b e t w e e n m e t a c o g n i t i o n , m o t i v a t i o n , l o c u s o f c o n t r o l , self-efficacy, a n d a c a d e m i c average. It was c o n c l u d e d that m e t a c o g n i t i o n a n d these p e r s o n a l i t y var iab les are r e l a t e d to a c a d e m i c a c h i e v e m e n t .
